Cheese & caramelised onion tart

Cheese & caramelised onion tart

The rich flavours of salty cheese and sweet caramelized onions are combined in a flaky pastry crust to create the delightful cheese and caramelized onion tart. A picnic, a light lunch, or an appetizer for a dinner party would all be excellent occasions for serving this dish. A combination of cheeses, including Gruyere, Cheddar, or Brie, are combined with eggs, milk, and spices to make the tart's creamy cheese filling, which has a velvety feel. Onions that have been caramelized, on the other hand, provide the food a richer, more complex flavour. The tart is a stunning and delectable complement to any dinner when it is baked since it has a golden-brown crust, a creamy and cheesy interior, and wonderfully caramelized onions on top. This Cheese and Caramelized Onion Tart will impress your visitors whether it is served warm or cold and will please your palate.

Ingredients

  • 40g of butter
  • 8 onions (800g), thinly sliced
  • Double cream in 300 ml
  • a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 4 egg yolks (freeze the whites for another recipe, such as meringue)
  • 100g grated mature veggie cheddar plus additional servings (optional)
  • thinly sliced chives to serve

      For the pastry
  • 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 125g cold butter, cut into cubes
  • 1 egg, beaten

Steps

    • The pastry must be made first in order to make the cheese and caramelized onion tart. Use your fingertips to stir the flour and butter together in a mixing basin until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Just before the ingredients are blended, add the egg to the bowl and stir. Form the pastry mixture into a disc with your hands. This can be frozen for up to a month or kept for up to two days in the refrigerator.

    • Roll out the pastry disc to an about 28 cm-diameter disc form on a lightly dusted board. By rolling the pastry up, you can lift it and place it over a 23 cm tart pan. Using a small ball of leftover crust, press the pastry into the base and sides of the pan, allowing the extra to hang over the edges. For 20 minutes, place the pastry in the refrigerator to chill. Up to a day in advance, the tart pan can be lined and chilled.

    • Melt the butter in a pan over medium-low heat, then add the onions and season with salt. Occasionally stir the onions as they simmer for 45 minutes, or until they turn sticky and golden. Add nutmeg, mix, and then pour in the cream. Remove from heat after bringing to a simmer.

    • Set the oven to 200°C, 180°F, or gas 6. Using a fork, lightly pierce the pastry case's base all over. Then, line the pastry case with a sizable circle of baking paper, and fill it with baking beans, dried rice, or pulses. Once the parchment and beans have been removed, bake the crust for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until it is light brown. Break off some of the overhanging crust to see if the pastry is finished. It should be crumbly and fully cooked.

    • The egg yolks and two-thirds of the cheese should be incorporated into the onion and cream mixture. Place the remaining cheese on top of the mixture once you've poured it into the pastry shell. 20 to 25 minutes, or until just set and brown, should be baked. Allow the tart in the pan to cool completely before removing it from the tin and trimming the excess pastry with a sharp knife. Add additional cheese and chives, if preferred. Before serving, reheat leftovers in a low oven after chilling for up to two days.

After completing these procedures, you'll have a stunning and delectable Cheese & Caramelized Onion Tart that will wow your guests. An ideal balance of sweet and savoury flavours is achieved by filling the buttery, flaky pastry crust with a creamy cheese and caramelized onion mixture. The tart is topped off with a golden-brown crust and a dusting of cheese and chives on top. This tart is a wonderful dish that will have you craving more, whether it is served as an appetizer or as a component of a main course. These simple instructions will allow you to make a delicious dinner that will surely become a family favourite.
